Captain John Glossop was indeed the one who ended the career of the SMS Emden, but he was a British officer, commanding the HMAS Sydney. The intended correlation between the American Sky Captain in Last Flight of the Swan of the East is obvious, but in other respects, the fictional and historical Glossop must be very different people. This page is under Category:Historical Figures, however the character is more fictionalized than many others under that category.
