Pontbriand was a cruiser in the Flotte de Volée.
History[]
The Pontbriand is notable for an incident when driving off an Italian vessel that was intruding on French airspace: the Pontbriand's forward turret took a direct hit, killing the entire gunnery crew therein. When the Italian closed, the "dead" turret's guns fired, striking the Italian and forcing them to withdraw. While likely a function of ammunition cooking off in already loaded guns, this has given the Pontbriand a reputation as being watched over by the ghosts of dead crewmates.[1]
