Port Arthur, known to the local Chinese population as Lǚshùn Shì, was a Russian-controlled port city in the Liatung Peninsula of China.
History[]
The Liaotung Peninsula was taken by the Empire of Japan after the Sino-Japanese War, but the Triple Intervention forced them to give it up, and what became Port Arthur fell under control of the Russian Empire.[1][2][3]
In 1896, Japanese forces attacked Russia's Manchurian holdings, including Port Arthur, beginning the Russo-Japanese War. The Battle of Port Arthur saw Marshal Mikhail Skobelev dead[4], the Russian Pacific fleet defeated, and Port Arthur in Japanese hands, though the Russians were able to retake it in July that same year, in part due to Russian Berkuts.[5][6][7]
