This early gany was involved in an incident near the Alsace-Lorraine border in 1892. Crash-landing in unexplained circumstances during routine maneouvers, the vessel sparked an international incident. With the Germans accused of somehow bringing the vessel down with a new weapon, the French had an excuse to station a fleet there.
After this somewhat unfortunate affair, the wreck was towed to Grenoble, a French graving yard, where it was repaired and converted into a training vessel. Since then, every graduate of the École d'Aviation has served for two terms aboard the vessel
