The United States Sky Fleet was the air arm of the United States of America military.
History[]
First Attempt: USS Raleigh[]
In 1893, the first American leviathan, USS Raleigh, was a destroyer-sized craft that proved a dangerous disappointment. Riddled with technical problems, it crashed twice. In the last decade of the 19th Century, America remained focused on its wet navy.[1][2][3][4]
After Tsushima[]
The Battle of Tsushima showed the world that the future of warfare was in the skies. The United States offered the hand of friendship to the Empire of Japan in the hour of the latter's humiliating defeat: a delegation of Japanese military officers and engineers, and their families, were invited to come to America to work and study, including appointments to the United States Naval Academy. The Japanese delegation met and worked alongside the likes of Thomas Edison, Nikola Tesla, and George Westinghouse. Together they overcame technical obstacles as well as the activities of foreign agents, finally bringing the Pigeon--a working prototype leviathan--to flight in 1901.[5]
Edison, Tesla, and Westinghouse sought not only to replicate the European leviathan technology, but to innovate. At times cooperating, at times competing bitterly, they produced new technology and systems such as improved torpedoes, the Edison coil, an advanced fire control system, and the TED gun.[6][4][7]
Roosevelt, the Sky Academy, and Morocco[]
President Theodore Roosevelt took office in 1901 after William McKinley, and dedicated the new United States Sky Academy to McKinley's memory.[8][9] Eight new classes of leviathan were laid down in American yards, and the United States Sky Fleet began to take form.[2]
Just three years later, the new service was put to its first test on the world stage: the Perdicaris Affair. The USS Cleveland first conducted a daring hostage rescue, and then fought a French cruiser to a draw.[10] The Cleveland's captain, William Southerland, was given the Congressional Medal of Honor.[11]
The Great White Fleet[]
From 1907 to 1909, the Great White Fleet circumnavigated the globe, showing the American flag and their new leviathan technology in foreign ports of call.[12][13][14][15]
Trouble North and South[]
In 1913, the Russian Empire made an exploratory incursion into Alaska, to determine if it would be possible to reclaim that eteroid-rich territory from the United States. A partial squadron of leviathans from Juneau were dispatched to intercept them, and the Russians retreated after suffering serious damage.[16]
The Midnight War turned South America into a hotbed of brushfire wars, with the Empire of Japan backing Argentina and the United States using Brazil as a proxy. During the signing of a treaty between America and Brazil, a Japanese destroyer engaged a Brazilian destroyer that had an American officer aboard as an advisor.[11]
